How does the RAM multifunction tailgate work?
Did you know that RAM has a multifunction tailgate of its own? It certainly does and it’s new for 2019. How does the RAM multifunction tailgate work? We can show you and we’ll also tell you when it will be available and on what trucks you will be able to get it.
What is the RAM multifunction tailgate?
The new RAM multifunction tailgate features a 60/40 split allowing you to open either side independently with a vertical hinge. This allows for access closer to the bumper for easier loading and unloading as both portions fold out to 88 degrees. Ingress and egress are also simplified and can be made even easier with the addition of an optional center step.

In addition to all that, the multifunction tailgate can also operate like a normal tailgate folding down flat and still utilizing remote release and dampening technology. On top of that, in the down position, the multifunction tailgate can handle just as much of a load as the standard tailgate at 2,000 pounds or 907 kilograms.
This multifunction tailgate does not require your trailer or hitch to be removed to use it to its full potential. What’s more, this tailgate only adds 75 pounds or 34 kilograms to the weight of the truck meaning that it will have a very minimal impact on your truck’s towing and payload capabilities.
What trim levels is the multifunction tailgate available on?
The multifunction tailgate isn’t available yet, but it is expected to reach dealerships sometime in the second quarter of 2019. Unlike multifunction tailgates from other brands, this tailgate will be available on every trim level. However, as of now, it will only be available on the RAM 1500. It can be had with or without the RAM Box option too.

Canadian pricing details have yet to be announced, but currently, the U.S. MSRP is set at $995. The optional center step is similarly priced at $295 MSRP in the U.S.
